Known as the Eagles Nest, the fortitude town of Marvão raises to 862 meters of altitude. The beauty of his architecture with its geographical positioning, transmit us a huge peace of spirit and calm. The utilization of the cliffs of Marvão for refuge of settlements devastated by invaders peoples, as lookout post or like strategic point, will date, at least, of the Roman period. Medieval fortification The Castle of Marvão was a strategic detention fortification, oriented for the border, of that is distant some scarce 13 Km. It constituted also an efficient place of refuge and an extraordinary point of observation and vigilance, since dominated clearly the second more important road of penetration of the armies of the neighbouring country, from Valência of Alcântara, in a vast zone above Alentejo that goes of Badajoz upon to Tagus River. His strategic insertion is clear: is part of the first line of detention, after Treaty of Alcanizes, wich goes, in the current District of Portalegre, from Montalvão to Elvas. |
